The British Standard
This is a 0.5 standard.
Notice the four adjusters for the compass
corrector magnets.
A British alongside an American Standard
The RAF were using the standard for
the mounting of Magnetic Compasses for some years before the Second
War. So for them it was natural when the Astro Compass came along
to have it designed to fit an existing mount. The Americans however,
when presented with the British originated design had no mount
existing in their Aircraft so it would be quite reasonable that
Compasses would have been supplied with a mounting, ready to be
fitted to the airframe.
