Japanese Navy Bubble Sextant
The Japanese bought some Bubble sextants
from the USA in the thirties and promptly copied them. Some of
the parts appear to be interchangeable with the American originals.
The national Maritime Museum state that the instrument has a clockwork
averager, again I have my doubts about this but having not seen
theirs it has to stay as a doubt for now. I purchased one of these
sextants from the States and it definately has no averager. I
see on the museum example an extended shaft from the index mirror,
perhaps something was fitted on here?
It is interesting to note the case for this
expensive and rather delicate instrument. It is extremely flimsy,
mine having wood hardly thicker than a cigar box and quite badly
cracked. I assume this was because of the severe lack of resources
during the war.
